You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway of life is narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few find it.
Matthew 7:13-14 NLT
Which road are you choosing to walk each day?
In these verses, Jesus paints a great picture of the paths we decide to follow. Everybody loves to take the wide, smooth and fast-moving interstate to get where they are going. Few want to drive the backcountry, rutted, washboard, dirt roads because they are rough and hard to make good time on. Jesus said that only a few would want to walk the path he wants to lead them on. Many times when you see pictures of these verses, the broad gate leads to the broad road that goes one way and the narrow gate leads to the narrow road that goes off a different way.
I think when you choose the narrow road, that gate is in the middle of the broad road and leads back against the flow of those on the broad road. Ever tried to walk one way when everybody else is going the other way? You bump shoulders. Get angry looks. People yell at you for going the way you are. At times it would be easier to just turn around and go with the flow. But that is not the way to the truth and life. Why do salmon swim upstream? Because they are trying to get back home. If you are following Jesus the road may be narrow and rough, but the view at the end is worth the trip.
